Data Security

Data security spans many areas, from social behavior, information handling processes and physical protection, to IT security solutions based on software and hardware.

Alertsec is focusing on one part in the data security puzzle which is easy to grasp for anyone working with PCs. Alertsec Xpress is the service that automatically protects ALL information you store on your PC. The fact that we now buy more laptops than desktops shows that the information we all store is increasingly more vulnerable to be exposed. It is a much higher risk to lose a laptop than a desktop computer.

There are a range of attempts to guide organisations and individuals to comply and handle their data security in a better way. Names like Sarbanes-Oxley, PCI Data Security Standard, HIPAA, and the Data protect Act are all examples of guides for different industries and sectors. Many organisations have to have an information security policy in place that proves they have taken necessary steps and measures to safeguard the information they gathered. If these policies are not adhered to, the regulators may prosecute.

In 2007 the Financial Services Authority (FSA) fined Nationwide Building Society £980,000 for failing to have effective systems and controls to manage its information security risks. However, it doesn’t stop there. Nationwide had to contact each end every one of their customers to explain what had happened and offer help with fraud protection. What the total bill came to with respect to customers leaving etc. is not known.

The failings became obvious following the theft of an employee’s laptop. FSA carried out an investigation, during which it found that the building society did not have adequate information data security procedures and controls in place, increasing the risk of financial crime for the customers.
