There are basically three elements to calculating total cost of ownership (TCO) for encryption: operations, licensing, and annual maintenance. Of these, operational costs far outweigh the price of encryption software. Companies and organizations may negotiate with software providers on the cost of licensing and maintenance, but there is no flexibility or negotiation available for limiting operational costs beyond the management capabilities of the encryption software deployed. And, obviously, the smaller a company or organization is in terms of numbers of users, even fewer options are available to slim line the cost of managing an encryption software solution in-house.
