Most laptops are stolen at the place of work. It is either an office or another site with a high density of laptops. Other common places are libraries and hospitals, where many "legitimate people" pass through posing as contractors, cleaners or delivery persons.
Any laptop leaving a protected environment (typically an office with security systems in place) is a potential target for theft and subsequent information breach.
The most common places to have your laptop stolen outside the office are conference centers, hotel rooms, cars, airports and train stations.
